The roof on your home will last many years with the proper maintenance, but eventually, the shingles or roofing material will begin to break down, and roof replacement will become the only option to avoiding leaks or other problems. The material you choose to use on the roof can help extend the new roof's life, and your roof contractors can walk you through the options and recommend the best roofing for your climate.

When Should The Roof Be Replaced

The roof on your home will let you know when it is time to consider a roof replacement if you watch for the signs of roof issues. Shingle roofing is one of the most common roofing materials used on residential roofs, and the material is durable. Still, if you have not had a roof replacement in more than twenty years, it is time to look at the condition of the roofing and consider replacing it.

Shingles will begin to dry out and curl along the edges as they sit in the sun year after year. Eventually, they can become brittle, and some of the shingles will come loose and fall to the ground. If you find roofing shingles on the ground around your home, you need to call a roofing contractor and have the roof inspected.

Look for dark spots on the roof of your home, then have a contractor check those areas for missing shingles and damage. Often these dark patches indicate missing shingles that have exposed the material underneath. It is darker because it has not been in the sun for twenty years and will stand out when you look at the roof from the ground.

Once the shingle starts coming loose, water can work under the remaining shingles and begin to leak inside the home. If you have water leaking in, you need to address it because it can promote rot, mold, and mildew inside the house. The longer the water leaks into the home, the more damage it will cause and the more expensive it will be to repair the damage.

Roof Replacement

Once the shingles are peeling off the roof, the material is probably too far gone to replace small sections or repair the roof. The most effective repair is to remove the old material entirely and do a full roof replacement.

Talk to a roofing company, such as iHome designs, in your area to find out if you need a roof replacement.
